The Ferrari Driver Academy according to Perez and Bianchi
A very useful experience
Thursday 15 September 2011 - 21h03, by Olivier Ferret Today saw the fifth and final Ferrari Driver Academy course of the year come to an end at the Fiorano circuit. The programme’s aim is to help talented youngsters involved in motorsport around the world and today, it was Sergio Perez, the Sauber Formula 1 driver, who was on track, having joined the Maranello nursery this year.
After a two day stint on the simulator, the Mexican got behind the wheel of an F60, the Formula 1car used by the Scuderia back in 2009. Perez completed 46 laps with a best time of 1.00.650. Next up in the cockpit was Jules Bianchi, who joined the Academy in 2010: this year he works with the Scuderia on car development. “Today, we followed two different programmes with Perez and Bianchi,” said Academy head, Luca Baldisserri. “Sergio impressed, despite this being his first time at the wheel of a Ferrari. He proved to be aggressive and quick right from the start and was able to adapt to the car in a very short space of time. He is very mature for his age, displaying an understanding that goes beyond the time he has spent driving single-seaters. With Bianchi, who has been with us since last year, we used a car fitted with special sensors to study the correlation between the car on track and the simulator: many of his laps were what I’d call ‘interlocutory’ because the main aim of them was to acquire data.”
The Frenchman did 70 laps, the quickest being a 1.00.213. “We did a lot of laps and once again it was a very useful experience for me,” said Bianchi. “These laps all count a lot towards the future I’d like to have in Formula 1. Now, I’m looking forward to the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi and it will be very interesting to go from the 2009 car to the 2011 one, as it will be a good opportunity for me to try elements like DRS and KERS for the very first time.”
Sergio Perez was naturally very enthusiastic about his first time in a Ferrari. “This was a really special day for me,” said the Mexican. “I want to thank Ferrari for giving me this chance to improve and learn, given the limited number of testing opportunities during the year. Driving a Ferrari was a dream for me and it’s also important for my career, learning with a team like this and experiencing a different approach to the work.”
Asked about a possible future at Maranello, Sergio said he still had a long way to go and was happy with his current drive for Sauber. “I think there is room for me to do well where I am and that’s my current target. It’s impossible to say how things will go and my dream is to become World Champion and it would be nice if it could happen with a team like this one. I have got a lot out of this time with the Ferrari Driver Academy. The work on the simulator, the meetings with the engineers are all things that will help me over the rest of the season and in general in the future.”

Sergio Pérez will be visiting Singapore’s Marina Bay for the first time this weekend, with the Mexican having joined Sauber at the start of the 2011 season. Earlier this year, the rookie finished seventh on Melbourne’s semi-street circuit before being disqualified for a rear wing irregularity.
“I believe the Singapore circuit could be a good one for us,” says the 21-year-old. “I have not raced there yet, but I have gone a lot of work in the simulator and, knowing our car, I really hope we can have a positive weekend there. We obviously need to score points to get back our sixth position in the World Championship.
“I did some night racing in Qatar when I was in GP2 - it is a very special feeling if you live at night and it can also be fun. I will arrive from Zurich, which means I come from the European time zone and then for the night race you actually just stick to that and don’t go onto local time.
“I only had a quick look around Singapore during a stop-over, so I can’t say much about it as that was only a few hours. This time I will make sure I go early enough to discover a bit more about it.”
After the Italian Grand Prix, Sauber lie just one point behind Force India in their quest to recover sixth place overall for 2011.

Perez not afraid of pairing Alonso in 2013
"I’m motivated, not afraid"
Sunday 16 October 2011 - 07h40, by GMM Sergio Perez has targeted Felipe Massa’s race seat at Ferrari for 2013.
The Telmex-backed Mexican rookie will stay at Ferrari powered Sauber next season while Brazilian Massa’s current Ferrari contract is fulfilled.
But Perez, 21, is a Ferrari driver ’academy’ member and recently tested the famous team’s 2009 single seater.
Speculation suggests he is the favourite to replace Massa beyond 2012.
"Right now I have a contract with Sauber for next year and I have to do a very good job to get to go to a team like Ferrari," Perez told Spain’s AS newspaper.
"It is my goal to become world champion and to be with a team that allows me to work for that, like Ferrari," he admitted.
Perez said he would not be afraid to join Ferrari alongside a formidable teammate like Fernando Alonso.
"No, I’m motivated, not afraid. For me Fernando is the best driver on the grid and to race next to him in my third year in formula one would be very good for me."
"I could learn a lot from him and improve a lot as a driver," he added.
Alonso said in Korea that, even though he would be happy to have a new teammate in 2013, he is also happy with Massa.
"I am extremely happy with any teammate I have alongside me. I think we have a very strong team at the moment. In the future, nobody knows," he said.
Team boss Stefano Domenicali told El Pais newspaper: "Felipe knows that we would like him to be closer to Alonso."
"As a team, we have an obligation to offer everything in our power for him to do that. Anyway, don’t forget that Alonso is the fastest of all and to reach his performance is not easy," he said in Korea.
