A thread to talk about the coverage world wide. For us in the UK we have a few months left until we stupidly have to pay for Sky TV if we want to see a full season. But for all news and discussion on the coverage just post in here .

The other day it was revealed that MPs were questioning the BBC and Bernie over the Sky move and Dan Foster wrote a letter to Bernie. Well the daily express has a small piece on Bernie's reply to that letter.
BERNIE ECCLESTONE HITS BACK AT MP
Bernie Ecclestone said the move was forced on the BBC because of cost-cutting.
Saturday September 3,2011 By Bob McKenzie
FORMULA ONE boss Bernie Ecclestone told a leading Lib Dem MP he was “not realistic” after being challenged for switching most grand prix coverage to Sky.
The new deal from next season means the BBC will show only 10 live races, half the championship, while Sky will televise the whole series but on their subscription-only sports channel.
Bernie Ecclestone said the move was forced on the BBC because of cost-cutting. But Don Foster quoted him as saying: “The BBC brought Sky to us with the idea of a joint contract. It was not us who made that decision.”
He then told him: “I am alarmed that there is such a gulf between your stories.”
Yet Ecclestone said last night: “It is not realistic; he clearly does not understand the situation.
“We would have loved to have stayed with the BBC but they could guarantee nothing.”

Sounds like the non-BBC races aren't even going to be shown in full afterwards now

They never were going to be, the first press release said edited highlights, then when people complained the BBC said it would be the full highlights now its back to edited. Which is depressing.

This is the article Planet F1 has up...
'Only extended highlights for the BBC'
Bernie Ecclestone has ruled out the BBC showing full reruns of races next season, saying it will only be extended highlights.
Formula One fans in the UK have expressed disgust after Sky bought the rights to show all Formula One grands prix live as of next season.
Free-to-air BBC will only be showing half the season live, 10 races, while it remains to be seen whether the other half will be full reruns or extended highlights.
Last week there were reports claiming that the BBC will in fact show full reruns.
The Guardian reported that the races will be "shown on demand, through the red button, approximately three hours after the end of the race at the same time as the highlights package goes to air on the main channel."
These claims were backed up by earlier comments from McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh who said: "Bernie assured me, and I asked him several times, the deferred coverage will not be highlights, it will be a full race. That, to some fans, will be very important."
However, Ecclestone now says it will only be highlights.
The F1 supremo told The Independent: "The BBC will broadcast 75 minutes of every race."
See this is where I'd got confused. When they announced it I was SURE they said 10 live races and the rest highlights, then when asked Whitmarsh said it would be FULL reruns. What I wonder is if Bernie/Sky/BBC whoever it is pulling the strings got the teams on side saying full reruns. After all its the teams that are going to suffer just as much as the fans.

It is a shame, I prefered watching the BBC coverage.
I haven't really been keeping up with whats happened. Have BBC lost the rights for a reason? And Autosport are reporting that the details haven't been finalized at all so still could be a full rerun.

You mean the Autosport article that also said this? It is not clear, however, when these full race re-runs could be broadcast – because if they were too soon after the F1 event itself then it could lessen the attraction of viewers purchasing a Sky subscription. [ Full article here] I have this strange feeling I have a good idea of what is going on. As for what we know. BBC can't afford the rights, someone has brought the BBC and Sky together. Sky get full coverage, BBC 10 live races and ....

Has there been any kind of indication which 10 races we'll get on the BBC. At first I wasn't really bothered. Then I realized knowing our luck we'll get the races they know fans don't like! I guess we'll get Monaco, Silverstone, Spa and Monza. I mean they can't NOT show them live can they? Australia and Brazil will be live because they are the first and last race and it wouldn't be fair to not give us them. So thats 6 I can think of we should get (whether we will or not is another matter). I'd say then it would be general consensus that fans would want Canada. Then again they have to be careful they don't leave big gaps between races, after all you could go from one live race where Alonso is 10 points ahead in the championship and then come back 3 races later when he's 25 points behind and all the passion for that (if all we get are highlights) will be wiped out. Maybe I'm just tired and over thinking here, but its worrying me more then ever the closer we get to 2012 . If I see Valencia as a live race on the BBC I will riot!

Monaco, Silverstone and the season finale are defiantly being shown live I think. I doubt we'll hear BBC's plans for the coverage till the new year unfortunately. I'm fully expecting the worst races My biggest concern is what if the championship is decided at the penultimate race (e.g. 2009) and we miss it?!?

Yeah I guess, the BBC don't tend to let you into their heads until the week of it happening. I really do think we'll get the worst races and for me the horrible thing is we've got a new track next year and hardly anyone will probably get to see it for the first time! I hadn't thought of that, that has just made me even sadder and if I'm to wake up in the morning to come on here and chat through quali I must go to bed so stop thinking about it I guess and just hope SOMETHING happens and SENSE prevails!

This is a post from another forum that seems to know a little more about how the races are going to be picked...
The deal is quite clear that the BBC get the first three picks, and they will be GB, Monaco and Brazil next year
So if this is the case, and Sky apparently then get 3 picks themselves, we'll lose Belgium and Canada for sure because Sky would jump to get those two ahead of the BBC. Though if this is true I don't blame the BBC for picking those three first, even if I don't like Monaco. You'd think in the interest of the sport its freakin' self Bernie would make sure the first and last races are on BBC, but I can see that being another first pick for Sky meaning us without freeview might not even get the first race properly.

Would expect BBC to try and get the European races and others that start at 1 as they'll pull in the biggest viewing figures and not interupt prime time programs for there S***y soaps, talent shows and whatever garbage they show at prime time

Yep that is what it looks like. Sky will like having the later races, plus it means the first any BBC viewers will be able to watch things like the US GP (which I was looking forward too) will be late at night... VERY late at night. Though thankfully it looks like there will be FULL re-runs, just on the red button starting to be shown at the same time the highlights will come on BBC1. Which might be good. Or for idiots like me with freeview might still suck as we only have one red button channel sometimes they don't bother with F1 now when they have FULL rights if something better is on.

Guess we'll just have to wait till the start of next year to find out the full details of what we're getting or not getting. Keep hearing different things that we're getting no more than 75mins highlights to we will get the full race on the red button. We'll get screwed over no doubt Hopefully I can get a job before the start of season and then get a SkyGo subscription which will allow me to watch the sports channels on laptop and Xbox. With the bonus of Sky Atlantic so I can legally watch Game Of Thones for a change
