Toro Rosso confirms deals with Cepsa, Nova
With immediate effect
Tuesday 6 September 2011 - 15h21, by GMM Toro Rosso has confirmed it will be sponsored with immediate effect by the Spanish oil brand Cepsa.
Spanish reports revealed the deal, involving the Mercedes GP part-owner Aabar, last week.
The AS newspaper said Toro Rosso’s 2011 car will be wearing significant Cepsa signage at Monza and beyond.
The report also said other brands linked to Abu Dhabi and its International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) will be added to the STR6’s livery, including the Canadian company Nova Chemicals.
Toro Rosso on Tuesday confirmed the deals with Cepsa and Nova.
AS last week said a full title sponsorship is then likely for 2012 and beyond, probably resulting in a wholesale livery change for Faenza based Toro Rosso.

Jaime Alguersuari: “I am very happy to be back racing at Monza which is a great track, with plenty of high speed sections and heavy braking to make it exciting. In both sessions today, I got a good feeling from the car and I think we are continuing to show good form, with some improvement when running in qualifying trim. The whole team did a good job today and there is more potential to come out of the car tomorrow and on Sunday. If we continue to work well through the weekend, I think we can be fighting on level terms with Force India and Sauber again on Sunday. We experienced the two DRS zones for the first time today and you can see from comparing the top speeds with and without the system, that it makes a huge difference to top speed, so it will be the key to overtaking in the race, although it will be less important in qualifying. There is quite a difference between the two Pirelli compounds, while degradation is not that bad and I think we can get more out of the Softs tomorrow.”
Sebastien Buemi: “This morning went well, as we tried out various things on the car to see how it felt around Monza, so overall it was a positive session. However, the afternoon was less successful as I only managed a handful of laps. I made a mistake and hit the wall, so I am sorry for giving the team a lot of work now to repair the damage. But, as they say, tomorrow is another day and this evening I will be working hard with the engineers to see what we can do for the rest of the weekend. In terms of tyres, not much to say and I only ran with the Prime so far. The DRS worked well and running the car in the Monza-specific low downforce configuration was interesting and enjoyable.”
Laurent Mekies (Chief Engineer): “Monza free practice is different compared to the other tracks, in that we have done very track-specific work today, to deal with the fact this is where we run the lowest downforce of the entire year. For everyone, this means running different wings, front and rear, so the first job is to see if they perform as expected. We did that and then worked on finding the right compromise between having good speed down the long straights and having sufficient downforce for the corners. We now have plenty of data to study to find the best solution for tomorrow and the rest of the weekend. We also evaluated different set-ups on both cars and even though we lost track time with Sebastien in the afternoon, we will be able to apply what we learn from Jaime’s data to Seb’s car for tomorrow. There do not appear to be any particular issues with the tyres, although our only long run so far was done on the Options this afternoon. From what we have seen today, it should be an interesting race on Sunday with the possibility of more than one strategy being applied.”

Jaime Alguersuari - P7: “I am very happy with my race today. I think I would like to start even further back on the grid for the next one, because it seems that whenever I have a poor grid position, I finish in the points! I am also very pleased for the team, as they got both cars home in the points. I am a bit surprised at the way the car performance came good on Sunday in the race, because I did not expect to be quicker than Force India and Sauber. Getting this great result at our home race, also makes it extra special. We need to keep on working like this and try and improve our qualifying performance on Saturday. If we do that, I think we can finish in the points on a regular basis.”
Sebastien Buemi - P10: “I am bit disappointed with the way the race panned out. I made a very good start, but then when an HRT triggered a big accident, I took a knock at the back of my car and it was definitely damaged in some way, as it did not work at its maximum potential from then on. If that had not happened, maybe I could have finished ninth or eighth. But while tenth is therefore a bit disappointing, losing out to Senna right at the end, when he was on the Soft tyre and I was on the Medium, it’s time to look ahead and think about doing better in two weeks time in Singapore.”
Franz Tost: “Our home track always appears to be a lucky one for us, because we seem to finish regularly in the points here at Monza. Jaime’s seventh place finish was the best result of his Formula 1 career and it was the team’s best so far this season and a good result overall as we got both cars home in the points, with Sebastien Buemi tenth past the flag. The points we got today see us close the gap to both Force India and Sauber in the Constructors’ Championship. Jaime drove an excellent race, making up eleven places from his grid position. He was especially quick on his second set of tyres, putting in one fastest lap after another. Sebastien was lucky to finish the race, after being involved in a collision when he clipped another car with the left rear tyre. Well done to the entire team, who delivered a good strategy and executed it well during the race. This was a good way to end the European leg of the season and I am now looking forward to seeing if we can continue like this in the remaining six races of the championship.”

Toro Rosso ’right’ to axe both drivers - Berger
"I think it’s correct, although it is very hard"
Wednesday 28 December 2011 - 09h41, by GMM Toro Rosso was "absolutely right" to axe its entire driver lineup ahead of the 2012 season.
That is the claim of the team’s former co-owner and boss Gerhard Berger.
Faenza based Toro Rosso’s current owner Red Bull has ousted Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi in favour of the fresher Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne.
"I think it’s correct, although it is very hard," ten-time grand prix winner Berger told Austrian television ORF.
"For Red Bull and Toro Rosso, it’s about preparing drivers - ideally from the Red Bull pool - to find someone who can eventually succeed Mark Webber, or Sebastian Vettel when he moves on," said the Austrian.
Berger said Alguersuari and Buemi did not fit the bill.
"The demand to be at Red Bull is the highest of all, of course, and these two are average at the most," he said.
"So these two were good for Toro Rosso but not for Red Bull Racing. It was right (for Red Bull) to look elsewhere for what they want," said Berger.
Berger admitted he will be keeping a particular eye on French rookie Vergne in 2012.
"I’ve heard a lot of good about him — maybe he’s a new Sebastian Vettel. The only way to find out is to try him," he said.
And his teammate, Australian Daniel Ricciardo, admitted he will be looking to emulate Vergne’s aggression.
"Maybe I can learn from him, at least in the junior categories that’s been his style," Ricciardo is quoted by AAP news agency.
